What Inspection Records Should Accompany PVD-Coated 316L Parts?

PVD-coated 316L parts need records that connect the delivered item to its material, pre-coat condition, coating batch, coupon evidence, local thickness, required film properties, final dimensions, visual acceptance, deviations, and release. The exact package comes from the purchase specification. A coating certificate by itself rarely proves every functional requirement.

Build the record index during RFQ review. The index names each required document, its item or lot relationship, responsible source, review timing, and approval authority. This prevents a conforming part from waiting at shipment while suppliers search for evidence that was never defined.

Which Records Connect Machining and Coating?

The machining record establishes the substrate delivered to the coating source. It identifies 316L grade, product form, condition, part or lot, drawing revision, pre-coat dimensions, functional texture, edge condition, cleaning status, masking references, and approved deviations. Only required data need be supplied, but they need a clear identity link.

The coating traveler then records receipt status, preparation route, fixture or load identity, process specification and revision, deposition batch, represented part numbers, coupon identity, mask configuration, and any interrupted or repeated operation. Proprietary recipe values can remain controlled by the coater unless the contract requires them.

A stainless steel machining record and a PVD certificate answer different questions. The first proves the substrate state; the second describes the deposited process and results. The final record index needs both when the coating depends on a specified machined baseline.

How Should Coupon Results Be Linked?

A coupon result is useful when the record states what it represents. Identify coupon substrate, preparation, dimensions where relevant, fixture position, coating batch, process revision, test locations, and associated part numbers. If several chamber positions are qualified differently, location also belongs in the relationship.

Consider a hypothetical lot where hardness passes on a flat coupon, but the certificate does not identify its load. The number cannot release the parts because another batch could have produced it. The correction is not to relabel the report after the fact. The process needs a contemporaneous coupon-to-load identity.

Coupon testing cannot replace every part check. Hardness may be measured on a coupon, while film thickness is checked at accessible part locations. Masking, final dimensions, visual defects, and edge integrity remain part-specific or lot-sampled according to the contract.

The PVD process documentation also needs method context. A scratch-test critical load, for example, is not a universal bond-strength value. The report identifies the standard or procedure, indenter, loading conditions, failure interpretation, and acceptance rule invoked for the project.

What Should Final Inspection Confirm?

Final inspection occurs after coating and mask removal. It checks the features that exist in the delivered state: diameters, bores, threads, datum targets, surface texture where specified, coating boundaries, exposed keep-outs, fixture contacts, color range, and allowable defects.

Visual criteria need a reference. Define lighting, viewing distance or magnification where relevant, approved sample or defect images, and acceptance for droplets, pinholes, stains, scratches, edge chips, mask leakage, and witness marks. Color alone does not confirm composition, thickness, or hardness.

Measurement method and uncertainty need to fit the acceptance band. The final quality review verifies equipment status, item identity, actual results, exceptions, and approved dispositions. A pass/fail checkbox is insufficient when the purchase order requires variable data.

What Belongs in the Release Index?

  • Purchase order, drawing, surface map, and process specification revisions.

  • Material identity and the accepted pre-coat machining/cleaning state.

  • Coating batch, represented parts, coupons, fixture/load information, and process certificate.

  • Thickness, hardness, adhesion, wear, corrosion, or appearance results required by the contract.

  • Final dimensions, masking-boundary inspection, visual acceptance, and functional gauges.

  • Nonconformances, rework or stripping history, concessions, and change approvals.

  • Final certificate and authorized release status.

Record retention and format are contractual decisions. Specify whether native data, signed PDFs, photographs, raw curves, or machine-readable results are required. Also state correction rules so revised reports preserve the original entry, reason, date, and authorization.

Before award, ask for a sample redacted record index and trace one coupon result to a coated item. This simple test exposes weak batch linkage early. A complete package lets the buyer distinguish a qualified PVD-coated 316L part from a part accompanied only by a generic coating certificate.
