Useful roughness evidence for a machined round face identifies the surface, measurement direction, parameter, cutoff, filter, sampling length, instrument, state, unit, and acceptance limit. A single number without location or direction cannot represent a central face, groove, bore, and outer rim at once. The buyer should connect each trace or value to the function at risk and keep visual appearance separate from measured texture. The paired images show geometry and visible texture only, not roughness or material.
Mark whether the reading is on the central face, groove bottom, groove flank, opening, shoulder, or rim. State why that location matters and whether the surface is sealing, sliding, locating, cosmetic, or nonfunctional. A flat accessible area may be easy to measure but irrelevant to a seal in a groove. Use a drawing callout or controlled sketch to identify the location.
The two views show one round part with a central opening, radial grooves, and an outer rim. They confirm a same-product pair and different angles. They cannot prove alloy, hardness, dimensions, tolerance, coating, process route, or application. Use the drawing and records for those facts.
Specify roughness parameter, traverse direction, cutoff, filter, evaluation length, and number of readings. A stylus along the tool lay can report differently from one crossing it. A groove may require a direction that the instrument can physically reach. If the requirement is visual rather than numeric, use a controlled reference sample and state lighting and viewing conditions.
Do not convert a visual match into a numeric guarantee. Conversely, do not use a roughness number to release a cosmetic face when marks or color variation are separately rejected. Keep the numeric and appearance decisions explicit.
Record instrument identity, resolution, calibration status, stylus or optical method, operator, support, temperature, cleaning, and timing. A stylus may bridge a radius or fail to reach a narrow groove; an optical method may be sensitive to reflection, oil, or coating. State the accessible region and any excluded area. A measurement is useful only within its method boundary.
Preserve raw traces or values when the result is near a limit. Repeat after checking support, direction, contamination, and alignment. Do not round a borderline value into an apparent pass. Roughness evidence also does not prove flatness, runout, hardness, or fatigue performance.
State whether the round face is measured as machined, deburred, cleaned, coated, oiled, or assembled. Cleaning can remove residue that hid a burr; coating can cover texture or change a groove. If the delivered state differs from the measured state, identify the repeat checks. A quality inspection reference can organize records but cannot replace a state-specific plan.
Link outside processor, specification, batch, masking, before-and-after dimensions, and delivered condition when applicable. Keep as-machined and post-process records separate. A certificate supports processor information within scope but does not prove final roughness.
Texture is affected by tool geometry, feed, speed, step-over, depth, coolant, material, support, and wear. Record tool and program identifiers, setup, and trigger for replacement. If a tool changes during a lot, mark affected units and repeat sensitive surfaces. A fresh-tool reading does not represent later pieces made after an undocumented wear event.
For radial grooves, record entry and exit, bottom access, burr direction, and measurement path. A milling reference can frame face and groove strategies; it cannot prove the actual trace.
Every-unit readings may be justified for a small lot when one rough groove or burr can prevent assembly. Sampling may suit lower-risk cosmetic faces after a stable state is shown. A material lot, tool replacement, setup reversal, coolant change, or coating batch creates a new population. Link each reading to unit or sub-lot, revision, and state.
If a result fails, preserve it and define containment, deburring, tool change, expanded inspection, replacement, deviation, or new trial. Record original and new values, approver, and range. Rework must not erase the process signal.
For a sealing face, relate texture to leakage or mating condition. For a sliding face, relate it to movement and lubrication. For a groove, consider chip or residue retention. A functional check adds evidence but does not replace a roughness measurement where a numeric requirement applies. State the acceptance condition and boundary.
In the RFQ, provide location, parameter, direction, cutoff, filter, method, instrument, sample, state, packaging, and records. Ask for a redacted trace or field list and reaction to a failed surface. Require notification before changing tool, material, process, inspection, coating, or cleaning.
Accept when trace location, direction, method, state, unit identity, and limit are clear and the function is addressed. Hold when a number lacks direction, a groove is inaccessible, or an as-machined reading is presented as delivered-state proof. The buyer's next action is to approve the roughness map and state boundary before release.
