Which Cure and Final-Inspection Records Belong With a Powder-Coated CNC Order?

A powder-coated CNC order should carry cure and final-inspection records that identify the powder and substrate, load and part-temperature evidence, coating state, masking and rack condition, thickness and appearance results, critical dimensions, packaging, and the units or lot released. An oven setpoint or a photograph is not enough to prove that the film cured or that a coated hole, datum, edge, and label remain usable. The pictured bracket shows a light-colored surface from two views, but it cannot establish powder chemistry, cure, adhesion, thickness, corrosion resistance, or dimensional capability. The buyer should define the record packet and the release boundary before production coating.

Start With the Order and Revision

Record part number, drawing and model revisions, quantity, material designation, heat or lot identity, coating product, color or texture reference, and the date of the run. Link the coating traveler, inspection report, packing list, and any outside-processor certificate to the same job or lot reference. If a deviation or concession is approved, identify affected units, approver, expiry, and follow-up. A repeat order should be comparable to the approved revision, not merely similar in color.

Mark coated and bare zones, mask boundaries, rack contacts, datums, threads, bores, seating faces, grounding pads, and drain paths. State which features are checked before coating, after cure, after approved cleanup, or at receiving. A quality inspection reference can help organize the packet; it cannot define the part-specific acceptance state.

Document the Cure Window

Record the powder product and batch, required cure condition, oven identification, load configuration, part-temperature monitoring method, sensor location, time above the required condition, and reaction to an interrupted cycle. The setpoint describes the oven control, not necessarily the part temperature. A heavy corner may lag a thin flange, and a masked or shadowed feature may experience a different thermal history. Identify representative locations or a validated witness.

Retain the Pre-Coat Condition

Before spray, record preparation route, cleaning result, mask map revision, plug or cap depth, rack position, and any dimensional checks needed to protect a fit. A pre-coat check explains what changed during powder application and cure. It does not replace the post-cure check. If preparation or handling recontaminates a surface, preserve the observation and the containment rather than moving directly to a final pass.

Capture Film-Thickness Evidence

State gauge type, calibration, substrate response, resolution, reading locations, orientation, number of readings, sample or unit identity, and limit. Map broad faces, edges, corners, mask transitions, and other risk zones. A reading on one flat face cannot prove film build inside a hole or at a rack shadow. Preserve raw readings near a limit and note inaccessible areas with their alternate method or functional boundary.

Record Color and Coverage Separately

For appearance, identify color code, gloss or texture reference, comparator revision, lighting, viewing distance, orientation, inspector, and permitted defects. Record bare areas, pinholes, craters, runs, orange peel, contamination, edge thinness, and rack witnesses by location and extent. A visual check cannot prove adhesion or thickness, and a color reading cannot describe a hidden bore or a raised edge.

Keep the approved sample and the current reference together. If the buyer changes the sample, effective date, gloss, or acceptable texture, preserve the former reference and decide whether existing stock needs reinspection. Do not use the product photographs as the color standard.

Verify Critical Dimensions After Cure

Check masked and coated interfaces after cure in the state used for assembly or receiving. Verify thread engagement, bore or hole access, datum seating, flatness, edge break, grounding contact, label placement, and any specified fit. Record instrument, support, temperature, fixture revision, operator, result, and reaction. A CMM inspection reference may help with accessible location evidence, while a gauge or assembly fixture may address a combined fit question.

Keep a failed dimension or blocked feature even if an approved cleanup restores the fit. Record the original condition, removal method, affected units, new result, and approver. An abrasive, tap, or scraper can change the coating edge and the machined geometry; it is not an invisible correction.

Add Functional and Receiving Checks

Use a representative fastener, pin, fixture, gasket, electrical contact, or assembly when the risk is combined. Define insertion force, torque, seating, movement, leakage, contact resistance, or another acceptance response. Functional evidence reveals the interaction of coating, masking, burr, alignment, and mating hardware, but it does not prove chemistry or every unmeasured surface.

At receiving, check labels, lot identity, separators, moisture, rub marks, chips, oil, and the delivered coating state. Packaging can damage a rack witness or mix parts from different powder batches. Link receiving disposition to the packing and coating records so a field issue can be traced to the correct lot.

Maintain a Coating Change Log

Require notification before changing powder product or batch, color, gloss, preparation chemistry, mask material, rack contact, oven, cure load, gauge, rework method, packaging, or drawing revision. Record old and new states, first affected unit, evidence required, approver, cost or schedule effect, and disposition of existing stock. A note such as “same process” is not sufficient when a controlled state has changed.

Specify the Packet in the RFQ

Provide controlled files, coating and bare-zone map, material and lot rules, preparation boundary, powder and cure requirements, thickness zones, appearance reference, dimensional checks, functional test, sample basis, rework rule, packaging, retention period, and change authority. Ask suppliers to state their cure-monitoring format, raw-data availability, rack plan, first-piece evidence, and reaction to a failed or missing record. Separate coating, masking, inspection, testing, rework, and packaging costs.

Release When the Evidence Is Linked

Release when cure, thickness, appearance, critical dimensions, functional checks, material identity, packaging, and change records are complete, traceable, and tied to the active revision and affected units. Hold when cure is inferred from an oven display, color is the only acceptance evidence, a masked feature was not checked, or rework erased the original result. The buyer's next action is to approve the final-inspection packet and retention rule before accepting a powder-coated CNC lot.
