How Should Deburring and Cleaning Be Included in a Finish RFQ?

Deburring and cleaning should be included in a finish RFQ by defining the edges and passages affected, the permitted material removal, the method, residue or contamination limits, inspection state, packaging, and change authority. A generic “deburr and wash” line can hide work that changes thread fit, opening size, surface texture, or delivered cleanliness. The pictured threaded bushing provides visible geometry only; it cannot prove material, burr size, roughness, or cleanliness.

Start With Functional Risk

Identify threads, openings, shoulders, sealing faces, locating edges, grooves, and cosmetic surfaces. State whether a burr can cause interference, leakage, contamination, injury, or appearance rejection. A thread lead-in may need a controlled chamfer, while a locating face may allow only a minimal break. Mark each edge and passage in the drawing or controlled sketch.

The paired images show one cylindrical bushing with an external thread, end opening, and side opening from two angles. They cannot establish alloy, hardness, dimensions, tolerance, thread class, pressure, or application. Use the drawing and material records for those claims.

Define Removal and Edge Limits

Specify edge break, radius, burr direction or height, nick and scratch limits, and any forbidden sharp or rolled edge. State whether the limit applies before or after cleaning, coating, oiling, or assembly. If a numeric value is not practical, use an approved visual reference with lighting and viewing distance. Do not apply one global note when the thread, opening, and exterior need different treatment.

Define inspection method, section, support, instrument, sample, unit, and state. A visual check can identify a burr but cannot prove a radius or thread class. A comparator, profile, gauge, or microscope may be suitable when its scope is stated.

Choose the Deburring Method

State whether work is manual, abrasive, brushing, tumbling, thermal, machining, or another approved route. Method choice affects access, material removal, residue, and repeatability. A narrow thread or side opening may not tolerate tumbling, while a broad outer edge may. Require the supplier to identify media, tool, access limits, and cleaning after deburring.

Manual tools can remove a burr and also enlarge an opening or damage a crest. If a file, scraper, or abrasive is permitted, define region and check. A deburring reference can frame options without establishing the part's acceptance limit.

Define Cleaning and Residue

State washing method, solvent or detergent class where controlled, rinse, drying, residue, chips, fibers, oil, and packaging condition. A cleaning process can expose a burr, alter a visual comparison, or change thread engagement. Identify whether the part is accepted dry, oiled, coated, or assembled. Keep cleaning records tied to unit or sub-lot identity.

If an outside processor cleans or coats the part, record processor, specification, batch, masking, before-and-after checks, and delivered condition. A certificate supports the stated process within scope but does not replace final thread, opening, or surface inspection.

Protect Threads and Openings

Define thread crest, flank, root, lead-in, side opening, bore, groove, and passage requirements. Keep chips and media out of internal features. State plug, ring, mating, optical, or dimensional checks and their condition. A fit check demonstrates engagement but does not prove pitch diameter, roundness, or coaxiality.

Inspect the opening and thread after cleaning and any coating that can change fit. Record instrument, alignment, temperature, support, and timing. If a root or passage is inaccessible, state the boundary and alternate method.

Set Sampling and Reactions

Every-unit inspection may be justified for a small lot when one burr or residue defect blocks assembly. Sampling may suit lower-risk exterior edges after a stable state is shown. A tool, material, deburring method, cleaning batch, or processor change creates a new state requiring first-piece or sample evidence.

Define reactions for burr, oversized break, residue, damaged thread, mixed identity, or inaccessible feature: containment, controlled rework, replacement, expanded inspection, deviation, or new trial. Preserve original observation, new result, approver, and affected range.

Show Cost and Schedule Lines

Separate deburring, cleaning, inspection, coating, packaging, reinspection, and engineering changes. State quantity breaks and assumptions. A lower price may omit manual edge work, residue checks, or protected packaging. A quantity discount is not proof that the same delivered state is stable.

Write the RFQ Contents

Provide drawing and model revisions, edge and passage map, function, break or radius, burr and residue limits, material, operation boundary, method, sample, cleaning, coating, packaging, records, milestones, and change authority. Ask suppliers to state tools, media, access, first-piece, reaction, and delivered-state checks.

Approve the Finish Scope

Approve when edges, passages, methods, residue, state, sample, owner, cost, and reactions are explicit. Hold when “deburr” or “wash” is undefined, a thread is judged visually, or rework erases the original observation. The next buyer action is to sign the edge and cleaning map before production.
