As-machined finish for threaded parts should be defined by thread function, surface location, burr and crest condition, measurement method, cleaning state, and the point of acceptance. It is not a universal roughness value or an assurance that every thread will look identical. A threaded bushing can require different criteria for the thread flanks, lead-in, end face, bore, side opening, and exterior. The buyer should state the thread specification, mating condition, finish state, inspection, and reaction before quoting.
Identify whether the thread provides fastening, sealing, adjustment, retention, or a test connection. State mating part, lubricant, torque, temperature, preload, and assembly sequence when they alter fit. Separate major diameter, minor diameter, pitch diameter, lead, flank condition, runout, shoulder, and burr requirements. A broad “as machined” phrase does not define the acceptance of those characteristics.

Record accessible regions and boundaries rather than extrapolating one reading to the whole thread.
Preserve raw traces or values near a limit. Record instrument identity, resolution, calibration, operator, temperature, support, cleaning, and timing. Roughness evidence does not prove thread form, runout, material, hardness, or pressure.
Tool geometry, insert, feed, speed, coolant, stock, support, program, and wear affect thread texture and burrs. Record tool and program identifiers and the trigger for replacement. A fresh-tool first piece does not automatically represent units made after wear. A reversal or fixture change creates a new state that may need first-piece inspection.
Keep tool, fixture, material, and inspection records linked to unit or sub-lot identity. A threading reference can frame methods, but the controlled specification defines acceptance.
Use the representative mating component, ring, plug, pin, or gauge under a defined condition. Record engagement, torque, seating, leakage, or movement only when method and acceptance are specified. A fit check reveals combined effects of burr, coating, pitch, and alignment but does not prove every geometric characteristic. Keep it alongside dimensional evidence.
Every-unit checks may be justified for a small lot when one thread failure blocks assembly. Sampling may suit lower-risk exterior texture after a stable state is shown. A tool, fixture, material, cleaning, coating, or outside-process change creates a new population. Link each result to unit, revision, setup, and state.
Set reactions for damaged crest, wrong fit, burr, rough flank, inaccessible root, mixed identity, or missing data: containment, controlled rework, replacement, expanded inspection, deviation, or new trial. Preserve original readings and affected range. Rework must not erase a failed result.
Provide drawing and model revisions, thread class, mating condition, finish state, burr and edge limits, material, process, inspection, sample, cleaning, coating, packaging, records, and change authority. Ask for tool, deburring, fit-check, first-piece, and delivered-state assumptions. Request a redacted evidence format.
Approve when thread function, surfaces, state, method, sample, owner, and reactions are explicit. Hold when “as machined” is undefined, the thread is judged only visually, or coating and cleaning are omitted. The buyer's next action is to sign the thread and finish map before production.
