Powder-coating thickness affects CNC part fits by adding material to exposed surfaces, changing clearances, masking edges, and altering how a gauge or mating component contacts the part. The buyer should define the coating state, a supported thickness range, the surfaces included, the measurement method, and the machined allowance before approving a fit. A coating color or smooth appearance does not reveal film build. The pictured bracket shows a light surface and visible edges from two angles, but it cannot prove thickness, cure, adhesion, material, or dimensional capability. A quality inspection reference can organize evidence fields; the drawing and coating specification remain controlling.
List bores, pins, threaded holes, press fits, sliding faces, sealing lands, locating pads, slots, and mating edges that could lose clearance. Separate a feature that must remain bare from one that can accept coating with a defined allowance. A mounting hole may be noncritical on an exterior panel but critical when it locates a dowel. A coated datum can shift seating even if the overall bracket outline looks unchanged. Mark the functional relationship and the assembly direction on the drawing or fit map.
Write whether the dimension is controlled before preparation, after preparation, after coating and cure, after approved cleanup, or at final assembly. Preparation can remove residue or alter a profile; cure can change the coating state; cleanup can remove both powder and substrate. A pre-coat dimension is not automatically the delivered fit. If a feature is masked, state whether the bare condition or the mask edge is the acceptance boundary.
Specify gauge type, calibration, substrate response, resolution, number of readings, location, and orientation. A magnetic or eddy-current method can be useful within its validated range, while a cross-section or witness panel may be needed for a different question. A reading on a broad face cannot prove the film at an inside corner, mask transition, hole wall, or thin edge. Map measurement zones and state excluded or inaccessible areas.
Preserve raw readings near the limit and identify the unit or sample. Do not report only an average that hides a high edge value or a thin rack-shadow region. If the gauge cannot measure a recess, use an approved alternate method or a functional check with its own boundary. A method result describes the measured region; it does not certify all coated surfaces.
Review the worst-case stack for both mating sides. For a bore, consider coating on the wall, edge rounding, mask feather, and the pin or shaft condition. For a thread, consider crest, flank, lead-in, relief, and the mating class. For a locating pad, consider film build, rack witness, flatness, and seating support. The machined tolerance, coating range, measurement uncertainty, and assembly condition each need a defined boundary.
If the stack does not close, choose a controlled remedy: mask the feature, add machining allowance, narrow the supported coating range, change the fit, or approve a post-coat operation. Do not rely on a worker to “make it fit” with an unrecorded abrasive or tap. A CNC machining reference can frame the machined feature, but the coating allowance must be agreed for the specific interface.
A masked hole can remain near its machined size while its entrance receives a feather or a small deposit. A partially masked datum can have a bare center and a coated edge. Record plug depth, tape boundary, liquid-mask behavior, and removal check when those details influence fit. Verify the feature after cure, not only before spray. If cleanup is allowed, specify the maximum removal and repeat the dimensional or functional check.
Film build and cure are related but not interchangeable. A thickness reading does not prove that the powder reached its required cure, and a cure chart does not prove that a hole remains within clearance. Record powder reference, batch, cure requirement, part-temperature evidence, and the dimensional result as separate records linked to the same unit or lot. If a load or orientation changes, perform the first-piece checks required by the acceptance plan.
Use a representative pin, shaft, fastener, fixture, gasket, or assembly when the interface risk is combined. Define insertion force, torque, seating, movement, leakage, electrical contact, or other acceptance response. A functional check can reveal the combined effect of coating, burr, alignment, and mating condition, but it does not prove a hidden dimension or coating chemistry. Keep the functional result beside dimensional and thickness evidence.
Require review before changing powder product or batch, color or texture, mask material, rack orientation, preparation route, cure load, gauge, machined revision, or mating hardware. A change can alter film build or the reference state even when the nominal thickness range is unchanged. Identify the first affected unit, old and new states, evidence required, approver, and disposition of existing stock.
Use an effective lot or date boundary. A note such as “same as before” is not enough when the supplier has changed a fixture, oven, or cleaning method. Retain the former fit evidence so a field issue can be traced to the correct coating state.
Provide drawing and model revisions, fit map, bare or coated zones, machined tolerance, coating reference, supported film range, measurement zones, gauge method, cure evidence, sample basis, cleanup rule, functional check, packaging, and change authority. Ask suppliers to state excluded regions, mask assumptions, rack contact, first-piece evidence, and reaction to a blocked hole or tight fit. Separate coating, masking, inspection, cleanup, rework, and fixture costs.
State whether the order is prototype, qualification, production, second source, or repeat supply. Each purpose may justify a different sample and evidence packet. A low price that omits post-coat fit checks is not comparable with a quote that includes them.
Release when the coated state, interfaces, allowance, thickness method, cure evidence, functional check, sample, owner, and reaction are explicit and linked to the active revision. Hold when film build is inferred from color, a gauge cannot reach the region, a pre-coat dimension is treated as final, or cleanup erased the original result. The buyer's next action is to approve the fit map and dimensional stack before powder coating the production lot.
